Maro
Local guide

Maro

Wild, quiet and largely unchanged

Maro is what Nerja was thirty years ago. A village of 800 people above the sea, surrounded by protected cliffs and a natural park. There's one bar, one restaurant and more stars at night than you've probably seen anywhere.

Beaches

Caleta de Maro

A pebble cove at the foot of the village. Water so clear you can see the bottom at 10 metres.

Playa de las Alberquillas

Accessible only on foot or by kayak. White cliffs, clear water, no facilities.

Cala del Pino

A tiny sandy cove hidden below the cliffs. Bring snorkelling gear.

Where to eat

Restaurante Maro

The only restaurant in the village. Simple grilled fish, local wine, views over the sea.

Chiringuito Las Palmeras

Beach bar below the cliffs. Cold beer and fried fish. Open May–September.

Getting there

Maro is 4km east of Nerja. There's no direct bus — either drive (5 minutes from Nerja) or take a taxi. From Málaga airport, about 50 minutes by car.
